Why is Wings discontinuing Member Rewards for Debit Cards?

Due to federal financial regulations (specifically the Durbin Amendment), it has become cost-prohibitive to offer rewards with debit-based purchases. Debit rewards will be discontinued on July 1, 2023; however, points earned will not expire. While this was not an easy decision, Wings is committed to operating in our members’ best interests and making prudent financial decisions so we can continue to offer better rates and fewer fees.

What is the Durbin Amendment?

The Durbin Amendment, passed in 2010, is part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, limiting transaction fees for debit card issuers who have $10 Billion or more in asset size. Interchange fees (also referred to as “swipe fees”) are paid to financial institutions by merchants and used to offset the costs of debit card issuance, transaction processing, authorization, fraud protection and rewards points. As Wings Credit Union continues to grow towards $10 Billion in assets, we remain committed to operating in our member-owners’ best interest and making prudent financial decisions so we can continue to offer better rates and fewer fees.

When will Debit Cards stop earning Member Rewards points?

The last day to earn rewards points with the Wings Visa® Debit Card is June 30th, 2023. No more points will be earned with Debit Card purchases as of July 1st, 2023.

Will I be able to keep my points?

Yes. Points already earned will never expire and can still be used for redemption, even if you don’t have a Wings Visa® Platinum card or Wings Member Rewards Visa Signature® card.

How can I continue earning Member Rewards points?

Member Rewards points can still be earned with the Wings Member Rewards Visa Signature® card and an enrolled Wings Visa® Platinum card. Points earned with those cards will still pool to the same point account, and won’t expire. The Wings Member Rewards Visa Signature card earns 2 points for every $1 spent and the Wings Visa Platinum card earns 1 point for every $1 spent after enrollment.

How do I enroll my Wings Visa® Platinum card in Wings Member Rewards?

Wings Visa Platinum cards can be enrolled in Member Rewards through CU Online or the Wings Mobile App.

Can I receive retroactive points if I enroll my Wings Visa® Platinum card?

No. Points begin accruing after a Wings Visa Platinum card has been enrolled in rewards. Wings will not retroactively pay Member Rewards points.

What is Wings Member Rewards?

The Wings Member Rewards program is a points-based loyalty platform that rewards you for using Wings’ products and services. Earn points by using your enrolled Wings Visa® Platinum Card or the Wings Member Rewards Visa Signature® Credit Card.

If you have both of these cards, your points pool together for maximum rewards!
