Phone-Tech Support Fraud

This scam involves criminals posing as a technical support specialist and coercing victims to grant them access to a computer or smart phone. Once access is granted the criminal claims to be able to remove viruses and expired licenses for fee. There are variations of the scam in which the criminal requests the difference from too large of a refund, poses as a collections agent offering to recoup the lost funds for a fee, accesses personal information to open accounts in a victim’s name, or holds the computer hostage only to release control once a ransom is paid. To protect yourself form this type of scam remember that legitimate tech support companies will not initiative unsolicited communications with individuals. If you receive a pop-up or locked screen please shut down the device immediately even if advised by the criminal not to.
